How much does it cost to run a washing Machine?

Washer dryers are regarded as a separate category on the energy efficiency scale to ordinary washers and so an A rated washer dryer cannot be compared with an A rated washing machine. The energy consumption figures are based on a full wash and dry cycle with a maximum load. The table below shows the costs of using the wash cycle only or the full wash and dry cycle on a typical washer dryer machine.

Cost per wash cycle
(Carbon Dioxide Emissions)
Cost per wash and dry cycle
(Carbon Dioxide Emissions)
Annual cost for wash only
(Carbon Dioxide Emissions)
Annual cost for wash & dry
(Carbon Dioxide Emissions)
£0.234 (0.5kg) £1.06 (2.1kg) £85.377 (167.6kg) £387.271 (760kg)
The annual running costs are based on a single wash each day.

Drying a full load of washing costs in the region of £0.748 (1.5kg). If you do this for every load of washing it will cost you over £194.48 (381.7kg) per year depending on how many loads you do, 5 a week in this case. The best advice for using your drier is don’t! There are big savings to be made by reducing the amount of drying you do.

Can you give me any data on the energy use of washing machines using different washing temperatures e.g. 30,40, 50, 60oC?
Washing energy @ 30-40-60C - Guido Tonini  2015-05-16 19:32:30
Yes, search for the (online) thesis on washing machines by Emir Lasic, University of Bonn. He tested nine machines on the market, ranging from 5kg to 11kg max load. For each of them the electric energy consumption was registered for washes at 30°, 40°, 60°C and for full, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 (and empty) drum filling. Sinthesis and raw data are in the thesis.

Hi Patrick. can you be more specific. i.e. is it data about microwave ovens you are after or is it habits in the use of them in a single person flat?CheersRichard

I am trying to work out the average annual electricity consumption in a single person flat, excluding space heating. I wonder if you have any figures for microwave ovens?ThanksPatrick Fisher
